Most players notice the missing power only when a boss starts taking too long to die. In Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0, that gap often comes from skipped campaign rewards, not bad gear alone. Levels matter, sure, and so does Path of Exile 2 Currency when you're fixing sockets or upgrading weak items, but the quiet bonuses from quests and side bosses are just as important. Across Acts 1 to 6, a fully cleared character can collect 24 extra passive skill points, plus permanent boosts to Spirit, life, resistances, charms, and other small stats that stack up fast.

Act 1 rewards are easy to miss
Act 1 teaches the wrong lesson if you only follow the main road. The story path gets you moving, but several of the useful rewards sit off to the side. Players can pick up early passive points, a cold resistance bonus, extra maximum life, and a Spirit increase from optional encounters. That Spirit reward is a big deal for minion users and anyone trying to fit more reservation-based skills into a build. It doesn't look dramatic on the reward screen, but you feel it later. If your early character seems oddly fragile or starved for options, Act 1 is usually the first place to check.

Act 2 starts adding real choices
Act 2 is where the campaign begins to ask you what kind of character you're building. You can gain more passive skill points from optional bosses, and there are also utility rewards tied to charms and resistances. Some players lean toward a charm slot upgrade, while others prefer better charm performance, depending on how they handle dangerous effects. Lightning resistance and other defensive bonuses may also appear through side content. The catch is simple: a few rewards are tied to decisions, and you can't always treat them like throwaway quest loot. It's worth slowing down here, reading the reward text, and thinking about your build instead of clicking through everything.

Act 3 and Cruel make the difference bigger
By Act 3, skipped bonuses start to hurt. The game expects you to have more tools, not just higher damage numbers. More passive points are available through side quests and boss chains, while Spirit and fire resistance bonuses give certain builds a much smoother ride. Some rewards are linked to longer quest lines, so they're easy to miss if you clear zones once and never return. Cruel difficulty then adds a second layer. Many campaign reward types show up again, including skill points, resistance boosts, life scaling, and resource-related upgrades. It's not just a harder repeat. It's part of your character's permanent growth.

Why completion matters in patch 0.5.0
Patch 0.5.0 puts more pressure on builds during the middle of the campaign and into endgame prep. Resistance caps matter earlier. Bosses punish lazy gearing. Spirit-based setups need room to breathe. That's why rushing straight through the acts can leave a character feeling strangely underpowered, even if the passive tree looks reasonable. A careful clear gives you extra points for damage clusters, travel nodes, defenses, or build-enabling passives. It also gives you a cushion when your gear falls behind. Before you blame the build, check your quest rewards, optional bosses, and hidden objectives. If you're also planning to trade or buy Path of Exile 2 Currency to polish your setup, those permanent campaign bonuses should still come first because they're free power you only have to earn once.
