The 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Evolution is one of those Barn Finds you can miss for ages if you're just blasting from race to race. It's not parked right beside a highway, and the game won't nudge you toward it until you've done a bit of progression first. If you're saving your FH6 Credits for upgrades or rarer garage buys, this is a handy free pickup once the rumor becomes available.

How the rumor unlocks

Before you go hunting in the hills, make sure you've collected the Orange Stamp from the Discover Japan progression system. That's the key step. Without it, the Montero Evolution Barn Find won't appear on the map, no matter how closely you search the right bit of countryside. Players often waste time driving around Shimanoyama too early, thinking the barn is just tucked behind trees. It isn't. The game has to trigger the rumor first. Once the Orange Stamp is in your collection, check the map again and you'll see the search area appear.

Where to start looking

The barn is in Shimanoyama, over on the western side of the Japan map. Aim for the eastern part of that region, especially the mountain road with several tight hairpins stacked close together. You'll know you're in the right place when the road keeps folding back on itself as it climbs. Drive all the way up that switchback section. When the tarmac starts to flatten out and the road straightens, slow down a little. There's a dirt track heading east from near the top, and it's easy to overshoot if you're carrying too much speed.

The short dirt road to the barn

Take that eastbound dirt road and follow it downhill. You don't need to go on some long cross-country expedition here. The track is pretty short, and the barn comes up quickly once you've made the correct turn. If you've been bouncing down the dirt for more than a minute and still haven't seen anything, you probably took the wrong trail or left the paved road too soon. Turn back to the top of the hairpins and check the junction again. A rally build helps, but you don't need anything wild. Even a normal AWD car will handle the path without much fuss.

Why the Montero Evolution is worth grabbing

The Montero Evolution won't feel like a road rocket, and it's not meant to. With AWD, 276 horsepower, a D-class setup, and a strong off-road rating, it's better treated as a tough base for dirt events, exploration, and casual trail driving. Its 126.5 mph top speed and 7.51-second run to 60 mph aren't going to scare supercars, but that's missing the point. It's a Dakar-bred oddball, and Barn Finds are always more satisfying when they add something with character. Since it costs nothing once restored, keeping an eye on cheap Forza Horizon 6 Credits can be left for the cars you actually need to buy, while this one fills a useful off-road slot in your garage.
